Unwinding in Nagano: A Stay at Hotel Kisoji and a Stroll Through Nakasendo Magome & Tsumago Juku

Updated: Nov 6

Located in the breathtaking mountains of Nagano Prefecture, the Nagiso area offers a peaceful escape for those yearning to connect with nature and traditional Japanese culture. My recent visit to this stunning region was filled with unique experiences that combined outdoor fun, delicious food, and historical encounters.

Planning a trip to Nagiso? This might just be your best opportunity to immerse yourself in a serene and unforgettable adventure.

Cherry Picking Delight

Our first day opened with a visit to a local cherry-picking site. The thrill of picking your own ripe, juicy cherries right from the tree is an experience that shouldn’t be missed. The sweetness of the cherries was unparalleled. For about 2000 yen per person, we enjoyed an hour of cherry-picking, and every yen was well spent.

Surrounded by rolling hills and lush greenery, the orchard was not just a source of fruit but a small piece of paradise, making the experience even more delightful. Did you know Japan produced over 140,000 tons of cherries in 2022? Cherry season typically runs from late May to early July, making it a perfect summer activity for families.

A Stay at Hotel Kisoji

After indulging in cherries, we arrived at Hotel Kisoji, a spacious hotel nestled in the heart of the mountains. This accommodation perfectly blends comfort with genuine Japanese hospitality.

One major highlight of the hotel is its large hot spring bath. The onsen, set among towering trees, provided a peaceful escape. Even though the hotel was busy, the hot spring felt spacious and private. The clear water was refreshing, with a smooth texture that felt luxurious on the skin.

Comfort in Traditional Style

We stayed in a traditional tatami room, which offered a clean and peaceful space to unwind after our adventures. The room included a private bath crafted from fragrant Japanese cypress, which was a treat even though we decided not to use it. The view from our room's bath was breathtaking, showcasing the natural beauty surrounding us and enhancing our relaxation.

Dining at Hotel Kisoji was also a memorable experience. They offered a buffet-style dinner and breakfast, catering to various tastes, especially for families. Children could choose their favorites from a range of dishes, which is particularly helpful in Japan, where traditional meals might heavily feature seafood.

Exploring Magome & Tsumagojuku

On our second day, we explored Magome & Tsumagojuku, a charming town that has preserved its character for over 400 years. This delightful area features narrow streets flanked by shops showcasing local craftsmanship.

Walking through Magome & Tsumagojuku felt like stepping back in time. Visitors are reminded to look out for signs indicating wild black bear sightings, highlighting the town's connection to its rugged surroundings.

In one of the traditional shops, I discovered a beautifully crafted Magewappa bento box, a perfect addition for my daughter's school lunches. Magewappa, an ancient craft from Odate, Akita Prefecture, is known for its steam-bent wooden containers that are both beautiful and functional. You can buy Magewappa here.

As I wandered further, I was captivated by a crystal-clear river cutting through the town, fed by the pure mountain waters. The calming sound of the flowing water added to the tranquility of the area, providing a perfect escape from modern life.

A Journey Worth Taking

Our time in the Nagiso area was a delightful mix of nature, culture, and culinary adventures that left us wanting more. From cherry-picking to relaxing in idyllic hot springs, our trip was enchanting.

Whether you are seeking a quiet retreat or a family-friendly getaway, Nagiso has something for everyone. With its stunning natural scenery and rich cultural experiences, you are sure to create wonderful memories.

If you appreciate the peacefulness of nature and the charm of tradition, consider a visit to Nagiso. You might find yourself just as inspired by its serene atmosphere and delightful experiences as we were.
