Step Inside the Only Flat-Land Castle of Japan: Exploring the Hidden Wonders of Matsumoto Castle

Updated: Oct 25

Do you fancy stepping back in time and immersing yourself in the historical splendor of one of Japan’s last original castles? Join us on a virtual tour as we unravel the fascinating secrets and allure of the iconic Matsumoto Castle in Nagano prefecture.

A Glimpse into Japanese Castle History

Japan, with its rich heritage, once boasted an awe-inspiring array of 40,000 to 50,000 castles. However, the ravages of World War II have left us with only about 200 surviving castles today, many of which have been meticulously rebuilt and restored. Matsumoto Castle stands as one of the rare gems, preserving its original grandeur since its establishment in 1504.

What is So Special About Matsumoto Castle?

1. Uniqueness in Original Condition and Design

Out of the limited 12 traditional castles that remain in Japan with original conditions, Matsumoto Castle proudly claims its spot as a national treasure. The castle's striking silhouette, adorned with five majestic floors, stands out as a solitary figure amidst the landscape. Unlike most castles perched atop hills, Matsumoto Castle is distinctively located on a flat plane, offering a picturesque backdrop of the serene Northern Alps. On clear days, the castle's moat mirrors the breathtaking Alps, adding a touch of magic to the scenery.

2. Monochrome Beauty and Architectural Wonder

The castle's exterior, characterized by a striking black and white color scheme, exudes a subtle charm that captures the hearts of visitors. This contrast not only accentuates the castle's elegance but also represents a unique architectural feature that sets Matsumoto Castle apart from its peers.

3. Unconventional Design Marvels

Matsumoto Castle surprises visitors with the Tsukimi Yagura, a moon-watching turret added during a period of relative peace. Unlike its counterparts built primarily for military purposes, this addition serves as a captivating glimpse into the societal norms of the era. Moreover, while the castle appears as a five-story structure externally, a hidden loft on the 3rd floor reveals an additional level, revealing the castle's intricate design ingenuity.

There are additional intriguing elements, but I prefer you to discover them yourself! Let's now proceed to the practical section.
