After a delightful day at Mother Farm in south Chiba, Japan, we journeyed to Rokuya Onsen Ryokan, a charming hot spring hotel just 45 minutes away. This inviting retreat offered a perfect opportunity to relax after a day filled with laughter and fun.

The drive to the ryokan was a treat in itself. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and glimpses of the ocean, the setting created a peaceful atmosphere that hinted at the culinary delights awaiting us. Located near Iwaii Beach, Rokuya lay the foundation for a memorable seafood feast.

A Cozy Retreat

Upon arriving at Rokuya, we were instantly enveloped in a warm, welcoming ambiance that felt like home. Our room, adorned in traditional Japanese decor with tatami mats and sliding doors, created a charming and authentic experience.

The walls were a bit thin, allowing us to hear our neighbors' late-night chats. However, the tranquil environment made it easy to relax after a busy day with family.

A Seafood Lover's Dream

Dinner at Rokuya was a showstopper. Being close to the sea ensured the seafood served was incredibly fresh. Reflecting on my journey from a seafood skeptic in my childhood to now loving sushi and sashimi reveals how tastes can change.

The meal kicked off with a stunning presentation of sashimi (raw fish).

Toward the end we had an entire head of grilled tuna fish. The tuna's cheek meat, a prized local favorite, was rich and savory. SUPER EXPENSIVE too! The skillful dining staff removed the eyeball, making the dish more accessible and allowing us to savor every bit of this culinary treasure.

For example, tuna cheek can contain between 30-50 grams of protein per serving, making it not only delicious but also a nutritious option for seafood lovers.

What elevated more our dinner was an exciting innovation: a heated rock was used to warm the soup towards the end of our meal. Having experienced various onsen ryokan cuisines before, this was a first for me. Watching the rock steam and infuse flavors into the broth added an engaging element to our dining experience.

While our dinner was mostly idyllic, we faced a slight distraction when a group of lively guests at a nearby table grew increasingly boisterous. Although their laughter interrupted our meal's tranquility, we tried to focus on savoring each bite.

The morning greeted us with a sense of renewal. With the vibrant spring air surrounding us, we headed to the close beach. Even though swimming season had not yet begun, the beach provided a wonderful backdrop for family adventures, especially for the kids, who were delighted to hunt for shells and treasures.
