Exploring Off-the-Beaten-Path Japan: Discovering the Ryujin Ohtsuribashi Bridge and Yahataya Ryokan

Updated: Nov 6

Welcome to a journey through two spectacular and lesser-known gems of Japan. Join me as we explore the breathtaking views from the Ryujin Ohtsuribashi Bridge (official website here) and indulge in the serene experience offered by the Yahataya Ryokan in Fukushima Prefecture.

Exploring Ryujin Ohtsuribashi Bridge

The Ryujin Ohtsuribashi Bridge, located in Ibaraki Prefecture, stands as a testament to both engineering marvel and natural beauty. As the longest bridge in Japan, stretching an impressive 375 meters and towering approximately 100 meters above the water surface, this architectural wonder offers a mesmerizing vista that changes with each passing season.

During my winter visit, the absence of snow did little to diminish the allure of this bridge. With hardly any crowds in sight, the tranquility of the surroundings enhanced the experience. The clear floor of the bridge provided a thrilling but daunting view downwards, a feature that left my husband gripping tightly to the railings due to his fear of heights.

Designed to withstand the harshest of natural elements and capable of holding up to 3500 people, the Ryujin Ohtsuribashi Bridge is a true marvel worth exploring. Don't forget to capture the changing landscapes that each season paints across the stunning backdrop.

Embracing Serenity at Yahataya Ryokan

After crossing the bridge on foot and savoring the serene moments, our journey led us to the Yahataya Ryokan (official site here) nestled in the charming Bobata Onsen village in Fukushima Prefecture. This traditional Japanese inn promises an unforgettable retreat from the everyday hustle and bustle.

Boasting spacious public baths and exclusive reservable baths, Yahataya pampers its guests with a range of rejuvenating options to unwind and relax. The prospect of a sumptuous meal awaited us in the intimate dining room, and the flavors that graced our palates did not disappoint.

What truly captivated me at Yahataya was the stunning architecture of the hotel. The expansive center of the building gracefully rose towards the ceiling, creating a sense of grandeur and openness. As a cherry on top, the lobby featured a Japanese lady skillfully playing the traditional musical instrument, the "Koto," on a red carpet stage.

Conclusion: A Journey Worth Repeating

As the day turned into night at Yahataya Ryokan, time seemed to slip by unnoticed in the comfort of its welcoming embrace. The combination of natural beauty, cultural experiences, and warm hospitality made this getaway unforgettable. I can only hope to return with my family to relive this exceptional experience.

If you yearn for a tranquil escape into the heart of Japan's hidden treasures, a visit to the Ryujin Ohtsuribashi Bridge and Yahataya Ryokan should undoubtedly be on your travel bucket list.
